OpenAI GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6.1 Terra Are Now Available
GPT-6.1 Terra adds a mid-priced OpenAI option at $1 / $5 per million tokens, and GPT-6.1 Sol becomes the default. Anyone still on GPT-5.6 Sol now pays half.
OpenAI has released two GPT-6.1 models: GPT-6.1 Sol, an upgrade to GPT-6 Sol at the same price, and GPT-6.1 Terra, a new mid-priced model that costs half as much. Both are now in the AI Data Stream model picker. GPT-6.1 Sol is the most capable OpenAI option at standard pricing, one tier below the premium GPT-6 Astra, and GPT-6.1 Terra sits between Sol and GPT-6 Luna.
Pricing
GPT-6.1 Sol (per million tokens):
- Input: $2
- Cached input: $0.10
- Output: $10
GPT-6.1 Terra (per million tokens):
- Input: $1
- Cached input: $0.05
- Output: $5
Both models have a context window of just over one million tokens. How they compare:
- GPT-6.1 Sol vs GPT-6 Sol: the same input and output price, and cached input at half GPT-6 Sol’s $0.20.
- GPT-6.1 Terra vs GPT-6.1 Sol: half the price on input, cached input and output.
- GPT-6.1 Sol vs GPT-5.6 Sol: half the price of GPT-5.6 Sol’s current promotional $4 / $20.
The cheaper cached input matters more here than it might look. Every follow-up question re-reads the conversation so far, and OpenAI bills that repeated part at the cached rate, so long analytics conversations get noticeably cheaper on both new models. Caching is automatic; there is nothing to switch on.
Very large requests still cost more: OpenAI bills requests with more than 272K input tokens at 2x the input rate and 1.5x the output rate. Normal analytics conversations sit far below that.
As always, AI Data Stream is bring-your-own-key: you are billed by OpenAI directly at their published rates.
What’s New
OpenAI’s figures for the two models, picking the ones that matter most for analytics work:
- GPT-6.1 Sol makes fewer factual mistakes. On OpenAI’s internal factuality evaluation, built from conversations where users flagged an error, the share of answers with a factual error at low effort falls from 11.4% with GPT-6 Sol to 7.7%. Across effort levels it stays within 1.9 percentage points of GPT-6 Astra.
- GPT-6.1 Sol is better at multi-step business work. On AutomationBench, Zapier’s benchmark of business workflows across sales, marketing, finance and other teams, GPT-6.1 Sol scores 4.8 percentage points above GPT-6 Sol at medium effort.
- GPT-6.1 Sol reads documents better. On the GDP.pdf benchmark, which asks questions about complex PDFs full of tables and charts, OpenAI says it approaches GPT-6 Astra at roughly a fifth of the cost per task.
- GPT-6.1 Terra is a big step up on accuracy. On a similar OpenAI evaluation of error-inducing prompts, Terra’s error rate at low effort is 16.7%, down from 53.6% for GPT-5.6 Terra. At maximum effort it falls to 4.3%, close to GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol.
- GPT-6.1 Terra is fast. OpenAI says it completes tasks over three times faster than both GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol in its agent tests. For the most complex work, OpenAI still recommends Sol or Astra.
See OpenAI’s announcements for GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6.1 Terra for the full details.
Which One to Pick
- GPT-6.1 Sol for the default: deeper questions, multi-step analysis and reports.
- GPT-6.1 Terra for everyday questions where speed and cost matter, such as quick checks on traffic, campaigns or rankings. It is worth trying on your own data before assuming you need Sol.
- GPT-6 Astra for the hardest analysis, at five times Sol’s price.
- GPT-6 Luna for the fastest, cheapest answers.
GPT-6 Sol Stays, Two Older Models Are Retired
GPT-6 Sol stays in the picker, labelled as the previous generation, so you can compare it with GPT-6.1 Sol before moving over. It costs the same per token, apart from its higher cached-input rate.
Two older models are no longer in the picker. If either was your default model, nothing breaks and no action is needed:
- GPT-5.6 Sol → GPT-6.1 Sol, at half the price
- GPT-5 Mini → GPT-6 Luna, which is cheaper ($0.10 / $0.50 against $0.25 / $2). OpenAI is shutting GPT-5 Mini down on 11 December 2026, so we have moved it early.
New Default OpenAI Model
GPT-6.1 Sol is now the default when you add a new OpenAI provider, replacing GPT-6 Sol. If you have already chosen a default model, it stays as it is (unless it was GPT-5.6 Sol or GPT-5 Mini, as above).
Reasoning Effort Control
GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6.1 Terra offer every effort level in the chat picker:
- Low - Faster responses, lower cost
- Medium - Balanced speed and depth
- High - Thorough reasoning for complex analysis
- Extra high - Deeper reasoning for difficult, multi-step questions
- Max - Maximum reasoning for the hardest questions
Reasoning tokens are billed as output, so higher levels cost more per answer. With Terra at half Sol’s price, Terra at a higher effort level is a reasonable thing to try before moving up to a bigger model.
The Full OpenAI Lineup
- GPT-6.1 Sol - Advanced: the most capable option at standard pricing (default)
- GPT-6 Sol - Previous generation
- GPT-6 Astra - Most powerful, premium; for the hardest analysis
- GPT-6.1 Terra - Best value: half Sol’s price
- GPT-6 Luna - Fastest and lowest cost
Switching Models
- Go to Settings > AI Providers
