OpenAI GPT-5.6 Models Now Available
OpenAI released the GPT-5.6 family. We have automatically transitioned all GPT-5.4 users to the same-priced GPT-5.6 Terra - here is what it means for your analytics and your bill.
OpenAI launched the GPT-5.6 family - a new quality and efficiency baseline - and we have already updated AI Data Stream to support it. If you were using GPT-5.4 models, you have been automatically transitioned with no change to what you pay - no action needed on your part.
What Changed for You
Nothing you need to do. AI Data Stream automatically migrates your model selection:
- GPT-5.4 → GPT-5.6 Terra
- GPT-5.4 Pro → GPT-5.6 Sol
- GPT-5.2 → GPT-5.6 Terra
- GPT-5.2 Pro → GPT-5.6 Sol
Your API key, settings, and conversations all remain the same. GPT-5.4 and GPT-5.4 Pro have been retired in favour of the newer GPT-5.6 family.
No Bill Shock
The GPT-5.6 family shifts the naming by a tier, so we mapped the migration to protect your costs rather than your model name:
- GPT-5.6 Terra is priced identically to the old GPT-5.4 - $2.50 / $15 per million input / output tokens. Everyday GPT-5.4 users pay exactly what they paid before, on a newer model.
- GPT-5.4 Pro cost $30 / $180 per million tokens. It now maps to GPT-5.6 Sol at $5 / $30 - a substantial reduction for the same top-tier workload.
Standard pricing for the full family:
- GPT-5.6 Sol - $5 / $30 per million tokens (input / output)
- GPT-5.6 Terra - $2.50 / $15
- GPT-5.6 Luna - $1 / $6
As always, AI Data Stream is bring-your-own-key: you are billed by OpenAI directly at their published rates.
What Is New in GPT-5.6
GPT-5.6 is OpenAI’s new quality and efficiency baseline, with improved token efficiency - meaning it often reaches the same answer using fewer tokens, which lowers real-world cost beyond the headline price. The family comes in three tuned variants:
GPT-5.6 Sol
The flagship, frontier-capability model for the most demanding analytics - correlating data across multiple sources, in-depth investigations, and comprehensive report generation.
GPT-5.6 Terra
Strong performance at a balanced price. This is the workhorse for day-to-day analytics conversations and the automatic home for former GPT-5.4 users.
GPT-5.6 Luna
Efficient and fast for high-volume, lighter-weight tasks where speed and cost matter most.
The Full OpenAI Lineup
With this update, the complete OpenAI model lineup in AI Data Stream is:
- GPT-5.6 Sol - Most capable, frontier model
- GPT-5.6 Terra - Balanced performance and price
- GPT-5.6 Luna - Fast and cost-efficient
- GPT-5 Mini - Fast, budget-friendly
- GPT-4o - Reliable previous generation
- GPT-4o Mini - Budget-friendly option
Reasoning Effort Control
The GPT-5.6 models support reasoning effort control. This lets you decide how much thinking the model does before answering:
- Low - Faster responses, lower cost
- Medium - Balanced speed and depth
- High - Thorough reasoning for complex analysis
You can set a team default in Settings > AI Providers for your OpenAI provider, and override it per message using the effort dropdown in the chat interface.
Switching Models
If you want to try GPT-5.6 or switch between models:
- Go to Settings > AI Providers
- Click your OpenAI provider
- Select your preferred model from the dropdown
- Save
Or simply select it from the model picker when starting a new conversation.
