Google Tag Manager Is Now a Connected Data Source
Connect Google Tag Manager to AI Data Stream. Audit your container, catch broken tracking, and debug conversion issues with AI. Available on Pro and Business plans.
Conversions stopped recording on Tuesday. The site looks fine, the checkout works, and GA4 shows traffic arriving as usual. So what broke?
Nine times out of ten, the answer is buried in Google Tag Manager: a paused tag, a trigger that no longer matches, a consent setting that quietly blocks the event. Until now, finding it meant clicking through your container one tag at a time. Now the AI can just look.
Google Tag Manager is now available as a connected data source on Pro and Business plans.
Why GTM Completes the Picture
GA4 tells you what data arrives. GTM tells you how that data is collected in the first place. When the two disagree - traffic without events, conversions that stopped counting, numbers that doubled overnight - the explanation is almost always in the container configuration.
With GTM connected, the AI can inspect that configuration directly and answer questions like:
- “Why did our purchase event stop firing last week?”
- “Are any tags paused or missing triggers?”
- “Do we have duplicate GA4 tags double-counting pageviews?”
- “Is Consent Mode wired up correctly?”
- “Are there unpublished changes sitting in the workspace?”
What the AI Can Check
When you connect a container, six tools become available:
- Containers - Your GTM accounts and their containers
- Tags - Every tag with its type, firing triggers, and paused state
- Triggers - Trigger types and the conditions that fire them
- Variables - Built-in and user-defined variables
- Entity detail - The full configuration of any single tag, trigger, or variable
- Workspace status - Unpublished changes compared against the live container version
That last one matters more than it sounds. A change someone made three weeks ago and never published is one of the most common “why doesn’t this work in production?” answers.
Each tool can be individually enabled or disabled in your connection settings, and all access is read-only. We never modify or publish your container.
Three New Skills
The GTM connection ships with three new skills in the catalog:
- GTM Container Audit - A full container health check: orphaned and paused tags, duplicate GA4 configuration tags, trigger coverage, Consent Mode wiring, naming hygiene, and workspace drift.
- GTM Change Monitor - Tracks your container week over week and reports what changed: new tags, edited triggers, unpublished work building up. It uses AI memory to compare against the previous run.
- Conversion Tracking Debugger - Pairs GTM with GA4 to trace a conversion end to end: is the tag configured, does the trigger fire, and does the event actually arrive in your reports?
Like all skills, these produce shareable reports and can be scheduled to run automatically.
How to Connect
Head to your property’s Connections page, click Add Connection, and select Google Tag Manager. Authorization runs through Google’s OAuth flow with a read-only scope - the same one-click process as GA4 and Search Console.
Full setup instructions are in our Connecting Data Sources documentation.
Availability
Google Tag Manager is available on Pro and Business plans, alongside Google Ads, WordPress, and GitHub at the Pro tier. If you are already on Pro or Business, you can connect a container right now.
On the free plan? Upgrade to Pro to get Google Tag Manager along with the rest of the Pro integrations.
Example Questions to Try
Once connected, try asking your AI:
Audit my GTM container for broken or paused tags.
Which triggers fire the GA4 purchase event?
Are there duplicate tags sending the same event?
What unpublished changes are in the workspace?
Is Consent Mode configured on all marketing tags?
Conversions dropped last week - is anything wrong in GTM?
The AI works best when it can combine GTM with GA4. A question like “conversions dropped - is it the site or the tracking?” pulls from both sources: GTM shows how the event should fire, GA4 shows whether it actually arrived.
