# Are You Cited in AI Answers? Check Before You Pay for GEO

Connect DataForSEO and ask your AI which Google AI Overview and ChatGPT answers cite your site, which pages earn it, and how competitors compare. A measured baseline before anyone sells you GEO or AEO.

If you run a website, you have probably had the email. *"Your site is invisible in AI search. ChatGPT doesn't know you exist. Our GEO programme fixes that."* Generative Engine Optimization, Answer Engine Optimization, AI SEO: the names change, the pitch is the same, and it works because almost nobody can check the claim. Google Search Console shows AI Overview impressions in its UI, but no API. ChatGPT shows nothing at all.

So the first question in that conversation should be a measurement, not a feeling. **DataForSEO's LLM Mentions data is now part of the DataForSEO connection in AI Data Stream, on every plan.** Connect it, and your AI can tell you exactly which AI answers cite your site today, which pages earn those citations, and where you sit against the competitors the agency just named.

## What the Data Is

DataForSEO keeps a corpus of real AI answers: the question someone asked, the full answer, the pages the answer cited as sources, and an estimate of how often that question is asked of the AI platforms each month. It covers **Google AI Overviews** in around 94 countries and their languages, and **ChatGPT** in the United States in English, with data from August 2025 onwards. For ChatGPT it also records which pages the model fetched while answering but did not quote, which turns out to be the most interesting number of all.

It is the same data the GEO tools are built on. The difference is that you get to query it yourself, through the same chat you already use for Analytics and Search Console, with every answer carrying its own caveats.

## Five Questions You Can Now Ask

Each one is a tool your AI can call, and the AI knows which to use.

- **"How visible are we in AI answers?"** The number of answers citing your domain, the AI search volume behind them, the Google AI Overview versus ChatGPT split, the top countries and languages, a month-by-month history, and the other domains the same answers cite, which is who the AI treats as your peers.
- **"Show me the answers."** The actual questions and answers that cite you, with the question's monthly volume, whether ChatGPT cited you as a source or only retrieved a page without quoting it, and the other sources in the same answer.
- **"Which of our pages get cited?"** The pages that earn the citations, ranked. This is the most actionable one: it shows what kind of content AI answers quote.
- **"How do we compare to X, Y and Z?"** Up to ten domains side by side in a single call, with each one's share of the group.
- **"Who gets cited for yacht charter in Switzerland?"** The domains AI answers cite most for a topic, in a market you choose.

There is also a ready-made skill, **AI Search Visibility**, that runs them in order and writes the report, including a section titled *If someone is selling you GEO / AEO*.

## A Real Example

We ran it on a yacht brokerage client who had just received one of those emails. The site had never done any "GEO work". It is cited by **1,004 AI answers**: 977 Google AI Overviews and 27 ChatGPT answers. The questions range from "fort lauderdale boat show" to "how much does a 120 foot yacht cost", and the pages doing the work are the plain listing pages by boat length and a three-year-old blog post explaining the difference between a megayacht and a superyacht.

ChatGPT had fetched a page from the site in **128** answers, but only cited it in 27. The other 101 times it read the page and quoted a competitor instead. That is not a technical problem and no amount of schema markup will fix it; the competitor's page simply answered the question more directly. That is a content brief, and a far better use of the budget than a GEO retainer.

Against five named competitors, the client ranked last on citations, with about a tenth of the leader's count. That number is now in the client's report, dated, ready to be compared with the next complete month. It is also the only honest starting point for deciding whether any of this is worth money.

## Three Questions for the Next GEO Pitch

1. **"Cited in how many answers today?"** If the answer is "none" and your report says 1,004, the conversation is over.
2. **"Which pages would you change, and which questions would they answer?"** The cited-pages and cited-answers data tells you whether the plan matches how AI actually uses your site.
3. **"How will we measure it?"** Re-run the same report after the next complete month. Citations and AI search volume either moved or they did not.

## The Honest Limits

The AI repeats these in every answer, and we would rather you heard them from us first:

- Coverage is Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT. **Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Copilot are not included.** ChatGPT data is United States and English only.
- The current month is always incomplete. A drop in the running month is not lost visibility, and the AI is told not to read it that way.
- "AI search volume" is DataForSEO's estimate. Use it to compare, not as an audience figure.
- Domain matching is literal. An off-topic answer that cited one of your pages still counts.
- Citations are not visits. If you want to know whether AI assistants send anyone to your site, that is what the [Cloudflare connection](/docs/connecting-data-sources/#cloudflare) measures, and the skill cross-checks it when both are connected.

## Costs

This is a bring-your-own-key connection: calls are billed to your own DataForSEO account, at roughly $0.10 per call plus a fraction of a cent per row. The full AI Search Visibility report makes five to seven calls. The row ceiling and allowed-domains settings you already have on the connection apply to these tools too, and every answer shows what the call cost.

## Try It

If you already have DataForSEO connected, there is nothing to set up. Open a chat and ask:

> Are we cited in AI answers? Compare us with competitor-one.com and competitor-two.com.

Or run the **AI Search Visibility** skill from the Skills page with the competitors and a topic filled in. Setup for new connections is in the [DataForSEO docs](/docs/connecting-data-sources/#dataforseo). The plan feature previously listed as "DataForSEO Backlinks" is now simply "DataForSEO", because it covers both.
